Our Friend Zsolt

I need to set this up.  The year is 2004.  The race is the United States Grand Prix.  The broadcaster is Hungarian.  The subject is Zsolt Baumgartner, three laps behind the eventual winner (Slappy Schumacher).  11 of the 20 cars in the race have retired, leaving Zsolt in 9th place, behind only Giancarlo Fisichella... who is about to have a malfunction.

Zsolt the Bolt is about to earn his first and only point, and the only point ever earned by a Hungarian driver in F1.  Enjoy the broadcasters!

This may have been the happiest I have ever been in my years of being a F1 fan.

1 Well, I can't say I really understood what was going on there, but I can say that it looks like Indy is a pretty interesting course, with the track in the curvy part being wide enough so that passing is possible. Seems like I saw quite a lot of passing in there, but it may have been the guy at the back of the pack getting out of the way of the leaders who were lapping him.

2 Yah, all the passing in that clip was, indeed, backmarkers getting blown away by faster cars.  For example, The Zsolt passing Giancarlo Fisichella for 8th after Fisi suffered a breakdown.

Then Fisi was passed by Slappy, who at the end of the clip was bearing down on Zsolt.

The Indy "roval" (road-oval) had a nice layout, but in practice it was somewhat disappointing.  LOVED turns 11-13, though the teams hated 'em.

3 As a British F1 fan it's easy to be blase about wins and points, however in the Olympics we're far less likely to succeed in most events, and the tone and joy of our commentators when we do is pretty similar. I think the classic of this was when we won a medal in the Men's Field Hockey, and after the crucial goal the proud British commentator said "Where were the Germans, and frankly who cares?"

Did love watching F1 cars going round some of Indy, let me pretend a bit they were doing the whole lap. One day, one day...

4 Ah, Flotsky ol' bean... we'll never see Indy in F1 again.  However, if you want to see something fun, check out this post!  Safety cars racing before the 2006 USGP...
