Five Minutes of Silence

At 306pm Central time, Northern Illinois University will be observing five minutes of silence, in memory of the victims of last Thursday's terrible shooting.

Many of the surrounding communities, as well as most of the area schools, will be joining NIU in this period of silence.

Many of Duck U.'s student support staff members volunteered to help out at NIU (in the dorms and such), so we've got even closer ties to them now than we did before, so of course our thoughts (and silence) will be with NIU's student body.

It's actually hard to believe it's only been a week.

Pond Art

Recently, I managed to get some new decorations up in The Pond, and I thought y'all'd be interested in seeing them.

First up: anime!

The quality of the snapshot isn't the greatest, I'll admit, but you can see what it is well enough... it's a douga (the closest thing to a cel you'll get out of a CG anime) from Azumanga Daioh, nicely framed and matted.  Of course it's hanging on the wall over the DVD racks.  There's something about Chiyo-chan's expression that makes me grin.

On the wall opposite this, we find ducks!

A couple of years ago, IKEA was selling a pack of postcards and I immediately saw them as wall-art.  It just took me forever to get around to picking up frames for 'em.

So that's a glimpse into the sort of place Pond Central is.

Shooting at NIU

Duck U. stands by you...

Earlier today, a man with a shotgun, a handgun, and (some reports suggest) a third weapon, walked into a classroom on the campus of Northern Illinois University in Dekalb, Illinois.  He proceeded to open fire, killing four and wounding 15 (some reports say 17).

NIU is about 25 miles from Duckford, and I've spent many a happy day in the library, and a few very happy nights on the campus itself (none of your business exactly where, if you know what I mean).

Because of this tragedy, Duck U. had a few tense moments... nobody really knew what was going on when it started, so there was some concern about the safety of OUR students as you can imagine.  Safety first... and the Duck U. security team is quite good (I may owe my life to them, actually, but that's a story oft told).

The Virginia Tech shooting was bad enough... but this is closer to home.  I had a Valentine's Day post in mind, but I suddenly have no interest in it.

Stay safe, my friends, and give your mom a call if you can.  Just because.

SNOWMAGEDDON 2008

Duckford is looking at maybe fourteen inches of snow by the time this storm stops sometime this afternoon.  Duck U. isn't going to open today, so it's a Snow Day!  Yaaaaaaaaay!

I'm scared to see what my car looks like.

UPDATE 213pm:

Oh dear.

UPDATE 1056pm:  The Duckmobile is stuck.  I'll need to clear a path for the wheels in the morning, using either a pot or an old pizza pan.  I'd do it now, but it's cold and dark and I can't see just exactly where I'm getting stuck.  Still, it's better than it was around 6pm, when I could only move a couple of inches either forward or back.  Now I can move about a foot.  First time in over seven years here at The Pond that I've gotten stuck.  Feh.

I'm A Sick Duck.

I need some of these, stat!

Not that this is a surprise to any of my readers, but I've got something wrong with me.  Unfortunately, in this particular case, it has nothing to do with a mallard on a surfboard, and everything to do with a case of the unfortunate ick.  Consequently, posting may be somewhat light while I attempt to deal with it.

What If...?

It was a brilliantly sunny day that Sunday morning, seemingly not a cloud in the sky.  People made their way to church, or did laundry, played golf or slept in.  Out in the harbor, motorboats took men from one point to another, seemingly at random.
A few miles out to sea, a metal behemoth sailed towards the harbor.  On its flat wooden deck, a white painted number "6" gleamed in the Pacific sun.  The Enterprise was coming home.  The time: 710am.  The date: December 7th, 1941.

The term "first order counterfactual" refers to the changing of one detail of a recorded event, and seeing where that change takes you.  In the world of "alternative history," such as Harry Turtledove's writings, a first order counterfactual may be something as simple as the Confederate Lost Orders not falling out of an officer's jacket, leading to the United States being divided permanently.

742am.  A huge flight of Japanese fighters and attack planes approach Pearl Harbor. Captain Mitsuo Fuchida, gazing out of the cockpit of his Nakajima B5N, has just keyed his radio to life.  "Tora tora tora!"

Back on board the Akagi, the flagship of the attacking Japanese fleet, static whispers through the speakers of the radio room.  Then, unexpectedly, Fuchida speaks again.  "There's a carrier in the harbor!"

In the actual events of history, the Enterprise had been on a mission to Wake Island, delivering fighters to the garrison located there.  Scheduled to return to Pearl Harbor on December 6th, she was running late... and thereby missed out on being the main target of the December 7th attacks.

Steven's Eye Is Better!

SDB had an icky eye problem, but he reports that it's gotten a lot better overnight.

That's good, because I looked up the thing he had at Wikipedia, and this was the photo used to illustrate it:

Battle Rush Week... Is OVAH!

Crossed the finish line in style, too...

So we finished up rush week in fine fashion, blowing last year's numbers out of the water, and making the year at the same time.  Can't complain about that, that's for sure.

And I got my boss hooked on Kanon '06, to boot.  She hasn't watched anime for about six years, and not much of that, either.  Here's a conversation we had a week or so ago:

Her: I saw a movie about a machine...
Me: Ghost In The Shell?
Her: Nooo...
Me: (thinking) Howl's Moving Castle?
Her: Nooo... it had a guy with a motorcycle in it.
Me: Akira?
Her: YES!  I didn't like it though.
Me: Believe me, Kanon is nothing like Akira.
Her: Are you sure?
Me: Pretty sure.

As I was leaving today, she asked me "So what's up with Ayu disappearing like that?"  My job here is done.

Now, a few days to relax, and not go outside... Saturday's high is supposed to be 5 degrees F. (That's -3107degrees Celcius to my Euroreaders)  And sleep.

First Day of Duck U.'s New Semester

So today was the start of the new semester at Duck U., or as we call it in The Biz, "Rush."  It may not have been the busiest day we've ever had at the Duck U. Bookstore, but might have been the busiest we've had in a Spring semester...

How'd it feel?  Like this:

Other than a quick bathroom run (even ducks gotta go sometime), I pretty much was on the cash register for nigh on seven hours straight.  My back hurts, my neck is stiff, and by the end of the night I fully expect a bruise to have formed on my left hand.

It's Christmas in the Bookstore!

In his comment section, Steven mentions that he could never work retail.  It does take a different type of person to do the job well.  I really enjoy helping customers, usually... but by the end of a day like today, all I really want to do is hide underneath the counter.  "Nope, not here, sorry."

A good CSV person has to have a hook.  It might be detailed knowledge of everything in the store, for example.  Mine is humor.  I'll be funny and try to make the customer laugh at least once.  It helps that I've been at the Duck U. Bookstore for almost four years, AND a graduate of the U. to boot.  I know the school like the back of my hand, I've been in the classes they're taking, and I'm on a first-name basis with a lot of the professors.  And the duck collection gets mentioned every once in a while, too.

Hey, it works.  I was the best salesman at the CowPuter store for the year I was there... mostly because I could be less-than-serious.  Computers are 'serious bidness' for most people; newbies are often afraid of them.  If they saw someone having fun talking about them, in English, they liked it.  It's the same way at the Bookstore.  Sure, the kids need the books, but they don't have to get 'em from us anymore.  Plenty of online places to get 'em these days.

They still come to us, though... I'd like to think some of the reason for that is the humor.

And the free burrito.  Don't forget that.

Here Come The Kids... There Goes The Sanity!

Careful readers may have noticed that The Pond has been somewhat slower than normal recently, and somewhat anime-free.  There are two reasons for this:

1) I've actually been WATCHING anime, rather than writing about it.  I tore through Magical Lyrical Nanoha StrikerS in three nights (I want Vita to have her own series...), for example.  Now, for some people, 26 episodes over a weekend may be nothing, but for me, that's a lot.
2) Over at Duck U., it's that time of year again: beginning of a semester!  Which means we'll do, oh, a quarter or so of our annual business in a week.  As you can imagine, we're a smidge busy.

I kinda wish I could do this... either the armor or the kendo stick.

So it's probably going to stay slower than normal around here for a few more days, but I've still got posts on Zipang!, Bamboo Blade, and Clannad coming, and I'll stay on top of the F1 Pr0n as the rollouts continue (on a related note, Honda is ditching the "ourearthdream" livery).

If nothing else, though, I'll still try and stick a picture up every day.  Maybe.  I hope.

Happy New Year, Everybody!

On Mars Aqua, hats fall from the sky when the clock strikes midnight.
It's considered good luck to catch one.

So another year draws to a close.  2007 will go down as quite the interesting one for The Pond.  Consider:

Odds and Ends

Things I've neglected to mention:

Thanks to Robert for his efforts on the behalf of all the Kanonistas out there.  He somehow managed to convince ADV to let him sell the first DVD of the show a couple of weeks ahead of the streetdate (1/1/200 ... of course, as soon as I found out, I placed an order (along with four boxes of Chocolate Decorer Pocky).  A few days later, it arrived in good shape, with only ONE Pockystick broken.  He's the bestest!

Now, if I can only convince him to get the Kanon soundtracks in stock...

I've been watching Zipang! recently, and the Pacific War otaku in me is giggling like a schoolgirl.  I had a post about half-done, but I pressed the wrong button and poof, all gone.  Still, here's a preview:

Yep, that's the Yamato there in the center of the harbor at Truk... guess Yurie's been around, huh?  Actually, the anime's set in 1942-43, so the Yamato hasn't been sunk yet.  The show is full of "anatomically correct" technical details, the type that would make Tom Clancy drool in recognition... like the revelation that the Rufe carried an auxiliary fuel tank in it's mail float, for example.  Watch for the post soon.

Oh, and because I know you've all been wondering, the cookies the Librarian's Mom gave me are quite yummy.

Two Questions For The Peanut Gallery

I'm looking for a good, free, Flash-to-Video (wmv/avi/whatever) converter.  Can anybody out there recommend one?

Now, here's the other question for y'all.  I'm wanting to watch an anime series that I can also write about here at The Pond... is there anything anybody is curious about, or wants a review on?  I'm open to just about anything, be it currently running or available on DVD.

For both questions, of course, leave your choice(s) in the comments, and thanks in advance for your help!

A View From The Pond

Ice storm last night, more predicted later today.  Duck U. is closed, so I've gotten an unexpected day off, hurray!  It's a good thing, as long as the power stays on...

Oh, who am I kidding?  It's a good thing, period.  I've got me some anime to watch...

Here We Go Again... AGAIN!

SNOWMAGEDDON 2007, Part II!

They're saying we're supposed to get three-to-seven inches of snow tonight, and the way it's coming down at the moment, I'm leaning towards the bigger number.  Of course, idjits out there can't drive in snow.

Honestly, it's not that bad out there, but there's still people WHO CAN'T DRIVE IN SNOW on the roads.  I mean, there's maybe a quarter-inch on the ground, and I saw five or six cars in ditches, fender-benders, whatever.

I swear, humans can't drive safe.
