T-Bird Sunday

So as has been previously related, the weather around The Pond on Sunday was pretty miserable.  Until around 1230pm, there were thunderstorms and high winds which caused no end of havoc, which prevented the Duckford AirFest from doing anything at all.

But the storms blew away, and with a four hour window before the next ones were supposed to happen, AirFest threw the schedule out the window and went for broke: how many teams can we get in the air in a limited amount of time?

The answer was "most of them."  The Pond was alive with the roars of jet engines and the growls of prop planes for a good while, but the prevailing winds were such that none of the actual planes came anywhere near Pond Central.

330pm.  The Thunderbirds could be clearly heard taking off in the distance.  I couldn't take my usual position off in the field behind Pond Central, since there were small rivers running through it, rivers that only form when it rains really hard, so I had to hope that I'd be able to get a pic or two from Pond Balcony.

Yup.

I had to adjust the contrast on this, but otherwise, it's as it came out of the camera.

Not bad, but I like this one better:

Different pass from them, same nice tight formation.  Less zoom, too.

The Thunderbirds didn't come into view for the rest of the performance.  Drat.  Never saw the two solos, either.  Double-drat.  The diamond is amazing to see, holding that ridiculously tight formation as they blitz by at high speed, low altitude.

Oh, and the Snowbirds?  They were at the Canadian Grand Prix.  Good reason not to be here!

Thunderbirds Are GO!

Yes, this is the best I could do today...
Today was a weird weather day for the Duckford AirFest.  Sudden downpours, hot, muggy, and very windy played hob with the schedule.  Out of the shot, about ten or 15 miles in the direction of travel, was a VERY ugly looking storm front, which was headed towards The Pond at a good clip.

In fact, it was such an ugly looking storm, that the Thunderbirds ended their (roughly hour-long) program after about 20 minutes.  Good thing, too: about five minutes after they landed, just as I made it back to Pond Central,  it became as night and the rain began to bucket down.

Even before that, though, I pretty much knew that I wasn't going to get any pictures as interesting as last year's.  The Thunderbirds' F-16 is smaller than the F/A-18 flown by the Blue Angels, seemed to be flying higher than last year's show, and the mostly white colorscheme did nothing to make them stand out against the low-ish clouds.  Hopefully Sunday will be a nicer day (the weather forecast doesn't look promising, though) and let me take some better pics.

Where'd It Go?

My recent post on Max Mosley's survival in the FIA "extraordinary meeting" had a little bit of a nasty javascript thingy in one of the pictures.  Instead of messing with it, I just decided to get rid of the whole thing.  Thanks to Steven for the head's-up and the e-mail explanation of what was wrong.

No, it shouldn't wasn't an ickyvirus, but better safe than sorry.  Sorry about the that, folks.  Here's something to make it up to you:

One week to go until I:GG debuts!

World Cosplay Champion?

The Brickmuppet took my advice and blogged on the World Cosplay Championships.  That gives me a reason to post this:

Some may take this as proof that I hate my readers.
Please remember, I had this on my hard-drive.

Blogpathy, or "I can't think of anything to post about, so here's some pictures."

Actually, it's not so much that I can't think of anything, but more I'm not feelin' the whole blogging vibe right now.  So here's something interesting I found on Fark...

It seems Giancarlo Fisichella isn't the only one who likes to put things that shouldn't be on top of other things on top of other things:

This is an example of a thing that shouldn't be on top of
other things, on top of other things.

So is this.
The story on this is actually quite interesting.  It's an uncontrolled airport (no tower, in other words), and the alleged "pilot" of the top plane didn't see the other plane on the runway when he came in to land... and landed on top of the bottom plane as it was beginning its takeoff run.  That's some mighty fine flyin' there...

Actually, I would have expected more damage, but I'm a duck... what do I know from planes?

UPDATE: Rule 34 is in effect... this is obviously how they make R/C planes.

THIS is why the Pirates have sucked for so long...

For the love of all that's holy, why?

The Pirates didn't REALLY wear mesh caps in 1986, did they?  And does Leyland's head look a little... odd-shaped under there?

as seen at the Uglybaseballcard blog, a great read for us fans o' baseball.

40.

It's April 23rd.  People who were born today include William Shakespeare, Max Planck, Admiral Karel Doorman, "Sunny" Jim Bottomley, Warren Spahn, Shirley Temple, Roy Orbison, Kenji Kawai, Valerie Bertinelli, Andruw Jones, and John CenaWrigley Field hosted its first baseball game on April 23rd, 1914, too.

And in 1968, in a hospital somewhere in Chicago, me.

At this moment, let us spare a moment's sympathy for my mother.  I was a big baby, pushing 10 lbs... and I was over a month late, originally scheduled for St. Patrick's Day.  Thanks, Momzerduck!

So today, I turn 40.  Nobody is more surprised than me.

And that, ladies and gentlemen and ducks, is the 2000th comment here at The Pond, according to the little counter down on the right sidebar.

Holy mackerel.  This duck is amazed.  Thanks to Steven for the comment, and to everybody who's taken the time to speak their minds about my lack of one.  Without y'all, The Pond would be nothing more than an empty water-filled hole in the ground with one weird, anime- and F1-obsessed waterfowl talking to himself in it.

Which is a very surreal mental picture, if you think about it...

Hmmm.

I'm finding myself at a loss of what to blog about.  Nothing is particularly jumping out at me right now.  Sure, there's a race coming up, but that's NEXT weekend.  There's a big event in my life coming up, but that's NEXT week.  Now?  I'm not even motivated enough to watch the last two episodes of Clannad (and then Toei's movie version).

So lemme hear from ya!  Gimme some ideas, 'cause I'm fresh out.

Meanwhile, here's a completely unrelated picture:

Chiyo-chan Gets A Facelift.

So I wake up this morning, brush my teeth, get a morning beverage, settle in front of Chiyo-chan (my smart and wonderful computer), and hit the power button on the 19" CRT.

Nothing.  Oh, it degausses itself, but nothing else happens, except for making this frightening "click. click. click. click. click." noise.

Crepe.  Dead monitor.  Well, I DID only pay $99 for it at Big Blue Box four years ago, I think that's decent enough value... but no matter what value I got out of it, it was still dead, and I was still without a working monitor.

Fast-forward to now.  Chiyo-chan is now connected to a 19" HP widescreen LCD... specifically, the w1907

Oh.  My.
I have to play with it some more, get the brightness/contrast levels to my liking (out of the box, it was bright enough to give me a headache), but this thing was a revelation.

Then I hooked it up to the computer via the included DVI cable.

Imagine all your life, you've been driving a miserable 4-cyl Yugo.  Then someone hands you the keys to a McLaren F1 supercar...

Yeah, it's kinda like that.

I tell ya, Morty, this thing is GOOD.

Yuri's Night: A Surprising Fact

Tonight is Yuri's Night, the annual celebration of Yuri Gagarin becoming the first human in space.
It's amazing to think that we've been going into space for 47 years now.  Astronauts, Cosmonauts, Taikonauts, those of other countries, and those of us who have ever dreamed of traveling into the "final frontier", should all raise a toast (vodka and Tang?) to Gagarin, the first of a select few.

But did you know that, during the run of NASA's Space Shuttle program, there have only been 830 crewmembers for all flights (including people who have been on multiple missions)?  A VERY exclusive group, considering the population of our planet.  Fewer than 500 individuals overall have gone into space.  A tiny amount of people from 37 different countries have "slipped the surly bonds of earth and touched the sky."

Now here's the Surprising Fact I mentioned in the title of this post:

Only 734 people* have ever driven in a Formula 1 race.  Fewer than the number of Space Shuttle crew.  Not that much more than the total number of people who have made it into space.

Who knew?

*That number includes individuals who drove in the Indianapolis 500 from 1950-1960, when it was considered part of the GP series.

It's Baseball Season (almost)

Baseball starts on Monday.  No, I don't count the Red Sox/A's games in Tokyo, or the Braves/Nationals game on Sunday, the first game of the season SHOULD be the Reds at home against whomever their opponent is.

My Fantasy Baseball League, however, has its annual player auction at 830am on Saturday... which is why this is a short post, because I've gotta get back to researching the 6th inning left-handed specialist pitchers...

A Legend Passes

Wally Phillips 1925-2008

The Pond is in mourning right now, as the news of the death of Wally Phillips hits home.  If you lived in the Midwest in the '70s or '80s, or you've worked in the radio business, you know who Wally was: the most popular morning drive host of all time.

Get this, Pond Readers... Wally Phillips was the morning host of Chicago's WGN-AM (720 on your dial) from 1965 to 1986.  During that time, WGN's morning show was not only #1 in the Arbitron ratings (Arbitron is the Nielsen of radio), but was far and away the highest-rated show in Chicago, at times garnering HALF OF THE MARKET.  His successors, Bob Collins (from 1986 until his death in a small plane crash in 2000) and Spike O'Dell (2000-present), have just carried on with the immense ratings.

But that was just in Chicago and the suburbs!  WGN-AM is a 50KW station, and can be heard in 38 States and Canada.

In a business where five years is a long time, and 10 years is forever, 21 years is eternity.  21 years on the top of the ratings sheet is unheard of... but Wally did it in one of the largest markets in the country.  He's often called the father of talk radio, though that might be stretching things a tad... certainly he was one of the originators of the genre.  If you listen to a call-in radio show, you're hearing things that Wally pioneered.

He was elected to the Radio Hall of Fame in 1993.  One of the quickest of wits ever on the radio, he died, ironically, of complications of Alzheimer's Disease.

You'll be missed, Wally.

All's Well: Toof Update.

First off, forgive any typographicasl errors that my be contained herein, but the vicodin is kcikin' my arse and I'm for bed as soon as this post is done.

The toof extraction went smoothly, took the usual amount of time, and has been accompanied by a remarkable small amount of pain.  There's been some, of course, but the vicodin has ruthlessly stomped that into submission for me.  It's making my fingers move not entirely as I will them, however, as well as making me extremely groggy.  "DOn't operate power tools or heavy machinery" indeed.

I DID get to watch Aussie Quals, but I'll be rewatching it Saturday afternoon so I can actually comprehend what I was seeing (the vicodin was really overstepping it's boundaries).  Again, I'm not sure if there'llbe a post on the quals session, or if it'll blend into the F1 UPDATE!.

Short version: Hamilton (McLaren) and Kubica (BMW) are the front row, Heikki (McLaren) is 3rd, Massa (Ferrari) is 4th.  Raikkonen is SIXTEENTH after a mechanical failure on the circuit prevented him from makign the pitlane.  He had made it to Q2, but because he couldn't coax his car back into the pit area after the failure, he wasn't allowed to continue (the failure having occurred on track by the definition of tte term.  If he had managed to roll about 15 more feet, no problems other than the breakdown).  Sebastian Vettel has given Toro Rosso their first Dry-weather Q3 ever.  SeaBass didn't make it to Q2, which wasn't a suprise to me... first race, after all.

SuperAguri was 20 and 22, which is poor, but considering that they weren't even sure they'd be racing at all until about Tuesday, it's not bad at all.

Okay, The Duck is going to bed.  Thaks, everybody!

Mee.Nu Problems

Earlier today, mee.nu, the domain for a good many blogs (including Chizumatic and Brickmuppet), was having problems being 'located', if you will, by the internet as a whole.  If you tried to visit those sites, you received a message stating "this domain is registered and maintained by one of our customers".

Pixy Misa, the great guru of mee.nu (and the charter member of The Order of The Honorary Duck), got the problem resolved very quickly; impressive, since he's in Australia and the problem was occurring around 9am Pond Time.

Unfortunately, the problem seems to have returned.  So if you've been having problems getting to any of those sites, that's what's going on.  Don't panic, they'll be back soon.

(Pixy tells me that The Pond is maintained on one of the same servers as those carrying .mee.nu sites, but since I'm a carryover from the .mu.nu days, I'm not affected.)

The Ick Is Back... d*mm*t.

Sick Yuno FTW x2!
Remember a couple of weeks ago when I had a cough?  It's back.  The difference now, though, is that I know what it ISN'T:

It isn't a flu (did you know they've got a test for that now?  They stick a q-tip up your nose then do something with it and then they know if you've got the flu... miracles never cease!), it's not pneumonia, it's not whooping crane cough, it's not a toomah, which means it's probably a virus.  And that, ladies and gentlemen (and my regular readers) means...

...there's nothing they can do for me, except try to keep the cough from expelling my lungs from my chest and out my mouth.  Whee.

That Aria post I was talking about is still in the works; it'll get up eventually.  For now, though, I'm going to bed.

Gary Gygax Has Failed His Saving Throw.

Gary Gygax, the creator of Dungeons & Dragons, and one of the founders of TSR Games (and the Dungeon Hobby Shop), passed away today.

I can't even begin to tell you how many hours I spent in Vaucaunson's Duck's basement, playing D&D with the group (John, The Other John, Paul, David, Jeff, and The Other Jeff)... many, many, many nights worth, that's for sure.  Lord only knows how many cans o' coke met their ends at our hands, or how many dice rolled across the table (and we never reached 4th level, either...).

I suspect that many of my readers have similar stories; the guy was a legend in the years before computer gaming took over, and has only grown in stature since, even after being shoved out of the game by TSR going under and being acquired by Wizards of the Coast.

Vauc, I remember he tried to hire Dr John once upon a time... any thoughts for the crowd?

UPDATE:  Order Of The Stick pays tribute and does it right.

"It's Not A Toomah." *

Poor Yuno...
...and poor me.  I actually had to leave work on Friday due to a case of the hacking coughs, accompanied by a head-and-body-ache, combining to make me one miserable duck.  While the aches seem to have gone away, the cough still remains.  Unfortunately, Ph.Duck tells me that I sound exactly like his co-worker... who was diagnosed with Whooping Crane Cough.

This was bothering me on Anime Night, too, but not to the same degree.  If the progression continues, I should be clear of this on Monday... if it doesn't, I might end up like the unlucky co-worker with Whooping Crane Cough, suffering with it for three weeks or longer.

Imagine a cough that feels like it starts somewhere around your thighs.  That's what this is like.  The weird thing is that it doesn't hurt my throat at all.  It just sounds like I'm one hack away from coating the room with blood.

For the record: I'm not.  I just want it to go away; blogging is difficult when you sound like a coyote.

*The title of this post is taken from the miserable little film Kindergarten Cop, starring Arnold Schwartzenegger.
