World Of Warships: I Admit My Error

Back in November of 2016, I wrote a little bit about the newest Tier VI ship in my collection, the American Cleveland-class light cruiser.  At the time, I said "it's a good ship, I just hate it."  There were a lot of reasons for that; I had enjoyed the ship just before it on the tech tree, the Omaha, immensely.  Most of my best games up to that point had been in the Omaha, and if there is a bigger change in playstyle from the older torpedo-cruiser to the newer ship, I have yet to find it.  The Cleveland's guns apparently has to lob shells into the stratosphere to get any sort of range with them, to the point that you can easily have two broadsides and maybe three (?) in the air at once.  This means that you have to perform quite a bit of witchcraft to hit anything at long range... like a battleship needs to do at 20km.  Problem is, you're a light cruiser firing 6" guns at 14km and you don't get a spotting aircraft.  

And while you're no delicate snowflake, maybe having the most armor of any cruiser at this tier not named Graf Spee, anything larger than a 20mm Oerlikion can penetrate you... I can't tell you how often I've been sailing along and then suddenly everything goes quiet and the hp bar gets very very red very very fast.  Yet, for all of that, I have a confession to make.

I was wrong about the Cleveland.  I very much enjoy playing it nowadays... there's a certain joy out of watching your shells disappear off the screen, only to reappear two minutes later and completely deluge a target you predicted would be at that very point, which was approximately 500 miles from where the target ship had been when you fired.  Or getting a lovely broadside shot on an Aoba and racking up 11 hits with six citadels and a 'Devastating Strike' award.  Nope, she requires some fortune-telling to play well, but it's rewarding as all hell if you can pull it off.

Oh, and if you haven't been playing the weekly 'scenarios', start doing so.  They're a blast and you get some nice rewards for 'em to boot.

1 I still don't have the touch for higher-tier cruisers.  My destroyer fame is getting pretty darned good, though. My first time out on a T-22 was the Two Brothers map. Everybody screaming at me to stay out of the middle, and I just said "hold my beer." Two Devastating Strikes and a Capture later, I kicked back and held position because the enemy team wouldn't cross East-West to support each other. "There waits the Kraken," they said.

3 Honestly, I haven't played in ages. The game's UI just doesn't deal with 4k properly... I enjoyed it, but I can't squint for that long!

4 I can tell when I've had a really good game in my Zuiho, because my "Karma" score drops (It's an often ignored number in the first page of your profile). But as a CV pilot, I hate the hell out of the Cleveland. It's a floating Bermuda Triangle.

Been grinding the French addition missions lately, which has me playing a lot of DDs. Mutsuki for torpedoes, and Jianwei for guns. I'm not horrible at it, except when I'm a little too aggressive as low tier in a tier 7 game. Playing the non-ARP Kongo so I can climb that tree as well. But I just suck in cruisers.

5 BTW, I've found the dynamic reticle with the full ruler very helpful. Also the setting that snaps your binocular view to wherever you were last looking in the right-click free view.

6 I didn't enjoy the Cleveland on my way up through the tech tree.  But I bought it back a while ago to do ops in, and so that it's in my port when the cruiser line split happens soon(tm).  Now that I know what I'm doing, and how that particular ship is supposed to be used.. wow she's a beast.  Find a nice spot near the middle of the map where you can hang out just a bit behind a blocking island and lob shells at targets that can't shoot back at you, and you can declare a 'no cruisers or planes permitted here' zone, and it takes a brave bb to push in to find you without his support, and if they don't push hard, you just have a nice BBQ.  I lost my Bismark to a Cleveland doing that most effectively just a couple of weeks ago, he stayed completely hidden where I couldn't even see him and lobbed HE over an island at me all game, and had 2 destroyers on the flank keeping me from getting to where I could fire back.

7 I played a round of the current scenario, Aegis, this morning.  One of the waves of bad guys includes three carriers.  By luck or something like it, I was positioned where their planes pretty much had to go to get to the rest of the fleet.
34 planes shot down later...

8 The Cleveland is still in my port for many of the reasons you described. Be glad you won't be going through the Pensacola in its former state. The old concealment was ridiculous. And the Cleveland feels positively tanky compared to the Pensa or NO (or even the Baltimore, IMO).
