Anyway, since I've got nigh on 450 AMVs on my computer, and have seen probably four times that many, I'd like to think I've seen some really good ones (and some really bad ones). Below the fold, take a gander at some of my favorites! All links lead to the AMV.org webpage for the video... free to download, if you're a member (and it's free to join)! Stop The Rock? might be the epitome of "cotton candy for the brain". The song sticks in your head, and the video (from 28 different anime) is an awesome example of editing gone wild... in a good way, though. EVERYthing is sync'd to the music within an inch of it's life. It's been downloaded over 52000 times on The Org.
Delerium, winner of the Best Dance Video award for 2005 on The Org, is a video that grew on me. When I first watched it, it actually made my eyes hurt for all the flashies and multiple-layers-of-footage in it. I've since realized that my eyes hurt because I couldn't stop watching! Using footage from 44 different anime, it's one of my favorites.
IWIWAL just makes me laugh. Oh, and none of them are.
To me, the best tribute you can pay an AMV is "it made me go out and buy the show." Die Another Day was the reason I purchased Noir. The same editor also created what I generally consider The Perfect AMV, Bebop 007. In it, Spike IS James Bond. Even if you've never seen Cowboy Bebop, you just know it's true.
Eternal Damnation uses the anime Hellsing, a tale of vampires in modern England, and the dramatic music of E.S. Posthumus (probably best known as the group that provides the music for CBS' NFL games). The combination fits wonderfully.
The last AMV I'll recommend in this entry won "Video Of The Year" in the 2006 Viewers Choice Awards at AMV.org, as well as "Best Dramatic Video," "Best Sentimental Video," and "Most Artistic Video". Jihaku takes clips from over 100 anime AND the original music video for the Foo Fighters' song "Best of You", combines them, and blows off the back of your head with the result.
So there's 7 AMVs to start out with... I'll do this again soon!

Any recommendations more focused in their sources? I've never been fondest of multiple source AMVs, though a common theme or sufficiently clever conceit can justify it (e.g., IWIWAL, Mitternacht, Right Now).

Single source AMVs... hm. Won't be a problem, except I'm at work at the moment, so my collection is at home. *chuckle* Later tonight, I'll do a post on single-source only AMVs.
