Ducks In Anime: The Lyrical Version -Servant x Service ED

We went bowling, my coworkers and I, last Friday as a "team building" shindig. After our time in the lanes was up, we went over to the arcade section. I won a couple o' cheap prizes' worth of "points" so what did I bring home?
Two little camo duckies, of course.
Relevant to this post: I'm 2/3 of the way through SxS and it's far, far more engaging than I expected. I'll probably push through to the end this weekend.

Ducks In Anime: In The Sticks -Non Non Biyori, Ep01 ED
Over at some place or another, a conversation took place concerning "shows that were like ARIA." The general consensus was that, other than YKK, there really aren't any shows like ARIA. That led to me trotting out my theory that the two shows take place in the same universe, but that's not the point of this little missive right now. One series that got a lot of support as feeling like ARIA without being anything like it was Non Non Biyori. I'll be honest, I knew absolutely nothing about the series other than the name, so what the heck, let's give it a shot. After watching the first two episodes, I've come to some general conclusions.
First, that's one darn handsome duck. Second, neh, it's closer in feel to Sketchbook than to ARIA, which is no bad thing in my opinion. Short version of story: Fifth-grader from Tokyo moves to tiny village out in the boonies, joins school that has four other students: 1st, 7th, 8th, and 9th graders. They're all in the same classroom. Hijinks occur languidly.
Third, come for Renge-chan playing the recorder, stay for the scenery porn. Everywhere you look, scenery porn. Languid scenery porn, to be sure, but there nonetheless. Should you watch it? Heck, I dunno... I've only seen two episodes and it's kinda been hit-and-miss for me. Languid scenery porn is nice and all, but something approximating a story would be useful once in a while.
Still... rubber duck in the credits. A+ for effort.
Ducks In Anime: Disapproval -Shokugeki no Soma, Ep07
Over the years, I have encountered many rubber ducks in episodes of anime, and this is good. I approve of this trend wholeheartedly. One thing that I do not countenance, however, is the use of rubber duckies as projectiles. Bath toys of any sort should never be thrown at others... it could hurt the duckie!
This occurred in Rio: Rainbow Gate! and Kanon '06 as well... no more! No more, I say!
Darn humans, always messing it up for the rest of us.
Ducks In Anime: One Punch Duck -One Punch Man, Ep01
I've never been happier for green water ever. The hype was ridiculous over OPM leading up to this season, and every ounce of me wanted to just ignore it. After all, fighting anime ain't my gig except for Ikkitousen, and the fighting isn't the reason I watch that franchise. However, I saw too many reviews suggesting that there was more to the show than just stupid over-the-top fighting, so I gave it a watch. Good thing, too... it's funny as all get-out. The main character has Superman's Dilemma... no, not how does he have sex... but what happens when you're so strong that nothing at all can threaten you, and you can defeat anything literally with one punch? If you're like our hero, you get bored. You fight mostly because you're annoyed by the beings that ruin the roof of your apartment instead of using the door, or because they destroyed the grocery store that's most convenient for you. You literally dream of a challenge that will cause you to actually have to work for a victory.
Instead, to you everything is a mook. And you are empty inside.
But your rubber duckie loves you. Because that's how rubber duckies do.
Ducks In Anime: Seeing The World
-Shokugeki no Soma, Ep10
I'm still only here for the duck, but there was an amusing joke involving it this episode. You'll want to click "more" to see what it is, as some might consider the scene NSFW. more...
1
Is this the one where right away in the first episode a girl does a taste test and it has a... profound and meaningful physical effect on her, ahem? I couldn't get through the first episode of that one...
Also, I'm disappointed that your first link doesn't include the super-pause portion of that famous sign-off: "...and now you know... the rest... of the story. This is Paul Harvey... ... ... ... Good day!"

GD, the MC is a very good cook indeed, good enough to give a shriveled old harridan memories of a youthful time with a meal made from tinned fish and scraps of veggies. So, um... maybe?
I'm only here for the duck.

I gave it four episodes and then dropped it. It's a one-trick pony, and they do the trick every episode. I got bored.
5
Funny enough, the last couple of episodes were pretty good. Less "achieve orgasmic pleasure through the power of mah cooking!" and more "I'm such a good cook that I will beat your supreme ingredients with stuff I pick up half off at the cheap supermarket". Show's definitely at its best when it's pushing the diner cook versus haute cuisine theme.

Ducks In Anime: Lyrical -Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha ViVid, Ep02
It's not grabbing me the way A's or StrikerS did, but at least so far ViVid has been harmless. I was exchanging e-mails with Ben after last week's episode, and he thought it strange that there weren't a lot of fansub choices available for the series.
I think it's because the Nanoha franchise is kinda old nowadays. The last non-movie installment, StrikerS, came out eight years ago to quite a bit of disdain amongst fans (though it's my favorite), and that's really a long time in the anime business. People who are anime fans now like as not have never experienced the Nanoha thingy. The two movies are graphically upgraded retellings of the first two seasons, which is great, but... y'know? There just isn't the excitement behind the franchise anymore.
But it's got a duck, and that makes it okay with me.
1
They'd have to pay me a lot more than six bucks a minute to come out of retirement for it...
I'm liking it well enough, mostly as a kind of "oh, hey, haven't seen you in a while, how are the kids" sense.

2
Considering the dreck CR has licensed this season, even without having seen StrikerS I might have been watching this just for something less-annoying to put in my queue.

I thought the first episode was mostly harmless, but the second was pretty good. It's got me looking forward to the rest of the series.
4
GD, a really good BD release of StrikerS just hit the intarwebbz. A's is the best installment in the series, but StrikerS is the one I enjoy the most.
Av, roughly $2000 for a 12ep show? Hm... I'm not sure if that's really good or really awful.
Ben, I hated what they did to Soobs and Tea, my two favorite characters from the entire series. Almost unrecognizable.
Posted by: Wonderduck at April 13, 2015 10:12 AM (jGQR+)
5
It's really awful. I basically did it for half rate because a) Pioneer was busily going out of business at the time and so was pretty short on cash, b) the day job at that point was working at Wal-Mart and so it wasn't too hard to beat that out, and c) I really, really like Nanoha.
Apparently Crunchy routinely pays something in that range for both timing -and- translation. At that, it's a miracle we get anything legible at all. It really ain't enough money to do it for a living.
I don't terribly mind the design changes - the old design for Tea was cuter but eh, they were late-teens before and it's been a few years. It's normal to change a little in there. (And Elio turned into a pretty nice catch for Caro...)

It looks like the last time Subaru went in for a rebuild, that they increased her chest size. (Or maybe I'm just imagining it.)
7
Everybody got a bit more generically fan-servicey, but I had made pretty significant allowances for people looking different. However, Subaru and Tea have both calmed down quite a bit. Subaru was extremely emotional in StrikerS, while Tea was strung pretty tight. Both of them seem to be on Demerol now.
8
You'd expect that too, no? They're both decorated veterans at this point. Subaru's been playing surrogate mom/big sister to a whole pack for years, Tea's doing good at her dream job as opposed to frantic that she won't make the cut. And this ain't exactly a stress situation - nobody's flying an invincible battleship to attack the capital or invading with super-powerful clones or anything. They're dealin' with a slightly odd girl who's fond of punching things, their own punch-happy little sister gave as good as she got AND used her brain... it's a happy situation all around.
As far as the boob fairy turning up for Subaru, when we saw her last, she was either in Midchilda's equivalent of basic (very physically demanding) or training Nanoha style (the same in spades with big casino and gone all-in!) That kind of lifestyle tends to hinder development of what are, after all, a couple of places to store fat. Now that she's a little less active, puberty has an opportunity to finish up. You see the same thing with gymnasts and swimmers too.
But that's the risk with these kinds of sequels, no? The old characters have overcome, they've faced their inner demons, they're enjoying the fruits of their well-deserved rewards for valor, and... suddenly they themselves just aren't as interesting anymore. Nanoha isn't exactly the same when the biggest challenge she has to overcome is making a tasty omelette rice. It's how the show treats them when they get into a stress situation that will show the quality of the writing.

You forget what Subaru is. None of that applies to her.
The only
original equipment left is her brain; everything else is metal and
plastic.
(Wonderduck, please delete the misformatted version of this comment.)
11
Hm, I thought she was not quite that cyborg-y; we see her pretty bloody in Strikers. Though yeah, at that point normal development is right out the window...
But she's not purely what we'd call a cyborg, right? I mean, she did grow up from a little kid like that.
Posted by: Avatar at April 14, 2015 05:00 AM (zTHWs)
12
Subaru:
Ginga and Subaru had to go in every few months while they were "growing up" to have their frames remodeled, and increased in size. It simulated the normal growth pattern of people with flesh bodies. That process wasn't complete at the time of StrikerS; we see Subaru and Ginga both go in for their latest rebuild at one point in that series.
This didn't happen for the Numbers; Scagliatti didn't care. Each of them appeared in their full-sized form initially even though the personalities were those of kids.
But all of them are what Ghost-in-the-Shell refers to as "Full Replacement cyborgs".
13
Man, it's been long enough since I've watched Strikers that I'm rusty on that. Obviously time to fix that!

I just watched the first Nanoha movie, on the basis that it might make ViVid a bit easier to understand without having to watch all 13 episodes of the original. I'm not sure it worked, I might have to watch the rest of the series now.
Posted by: Riktol at April 19, 2015 04:35 PM (MQZN9)
15
Riktol, I haven't watched either movie, so those with more info please correct, but my understanding is that the movies are based on the first two series,
while Vivio and most of the Belkan stuff doesn't appear until the third series, StrikerS.
Ben, that's almost correct. Even so, the second movie (which introduces Hayate and the Wolkenritter) is a lot more helpful than the first one.
But the Numbers and Vivio (and Erio and Caro and Subaru and Teana) are all from StrikerS. And Nanoha and Fate and Hayate are all full grown beginning with StrikerS, whereas in both movies they're still kids.
17
Riktol, if nothing else, watching the movies will give you a good foothold in the Nanoha universe. I may be in a minority here, but I believe both movies to be superior to their respective series.
That's not a knock on the series... I think A's is as good a piece of anime as you're going to find, particularly in the MG genre... but the movies cut away a lot of stuff the stories don't really need, and you get a tighter experience as a result.
As mentioned though, StrikerS is the source of a lot of the characters and backstory for ViVid. I love StrikerS, but I'm in the minority. It's also 26 eps long.

Ducks In Anime: ....Aaaaaand We're Back. -Yuri Kuma Arashi, Ep02
Awful, awful, so awful. Visually great, a very unique art style, but the show itself can't decide if it wants to pander or be highbrow artsy-fartsy. Or both. I was actually shocked when I discovered that it wasn't a Noitamina show... it's got the same feel as a lot of those.
Please note that I do not consider this a good thing. There have been 50 Noitamina series, and of those, I've only finished two: Library Wars and Ano Hana.
So anyway, yeah, give Lesbian Bear Storm a miss. Nice duck, though.

My record is a bit better: H&C, H&C II, original Nodame, Silver Spoon, Silver Spoon 2, Katanagatari. Of these, Nodame and Katanagatari were masterpieces. I dropped Moyashimon, Princess Jellyfish, Fractale, Shigatsu Uso. Overall it does not seem like a worse result than picking series at random.
Posted by: Pete Zaitcev at April 02, 2015 11:12 AM (RqRa5)
3
I dropped Katanagatari after four or five episodes. Again, unique look, but it didn't mesh with me. Nodame didn't click, for reasons that are still undefined. I sprained my eyeball muscles from rolling them so much at Fractale. I never understood the fuss about Moyashimon. *shrug*
Take that for what it's worth.

Yurikuma has a completely different DNA than the Noitamina block - it's Ikuhara being Ikuhara for an audience consisting, these days, almost wholly of Ikuhara. So think Utena and then Penguindrum, but without the usual mask of reality that later fractures.
Honestly, it's just bad. Okay, some stories you need to break the world in interesting ways without describing to the viewers what's going on - but you've still got an obligation to entertain in the meantime, and this show just -doesn't-.
Posted by: Avatar at April 02, 2015 02:08 PM (zJsIy)
5
I'm generally on board for BePapas-descended productions - shows written or created or showrun by people like Enokido and Ikuhara and so forth. But there has to be some sort of emotional reality underlying all the surreal styling, or else it's just masturbation. And I lost patience with Yurikuma Arashi. There isn't any foundation to it, far as I can tell.
It's all paint, no world.
Posted by: Mitch H. at April 03, 2015 07:35 AM (jwKxK)
6
The first 3 episodes of Yuri Kuma have a LOT of repetition, so I think it's better to watch them one episode a week rather than consecutively.
I do wonder why Ikuhara didn't condense them and shorten the series by an episode or so, it would have made it more accessible for people... unless he deliberately did it after hearing about the 3 episode rule.
Posted by: Riktol at April 03, 2015 11:41 AM (MQZN9)
So this magic penguin burps up flying gold fish that activate mutant powers in people when they fly into them. That, in a nutshell, is the premise of Tokyo ESP. Of course, there are people who use their new-found powers for Bad Things... and a perishingly few that decide to become the X-Men. Well, no, not really, but kinda. Hijinks occur, but they're of the "only mildly interesting" type. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have watched the show if it wasn't for the appearance of the Monochrome Schoolgirls in Ep01... I kept hoping they'd come back.
1
Hmm I watched the first 2 episodes, but I lost interest and dropped it. Although I did start more than 20 shows that season so I guess I was busy.
Posted by: Riktol at April 03, 2015 11:47 AM (MQZN9)
2
Riktol, you probably made the correct decision. I finished it because I really like Ga-Rei Zero, and TESP is by the same guy. I truly mean it when I say that I finished the series only because I was hoping that Kagura and Yomi would show up again.
Oh, there are plenty of worse series out there, but this one doesn't have any real spark to it. It was just another show in another season of shows. Not as good as some, not as bad as others... slightly above average at best, slightly below average at worst.
Unless you're a fan of GRZ, in which case the first episode is good, and the first five minutes are GREAT. Then you can stop watching.

Fish In Anime #2: I'm A Shark! -GYO Tokyo Fish Attack
Here's the plot of GYO Tokyo Fish Attack, near as I can tell from the German language dub I watched on youtube (note: I do not speak German). Something something something fish with metal legs something something kill and infect something something shark punches through door something something something circus something something human centipede.
Remember when anime could be really stupid without being nitpicked to death? I do. I miss those days. They brought us shows like G-On Riders. How can that be bad? Nowadays, there's no chance in hell that it could be made, let alone broadcast. A pity, that.
The Greatest AMV Ever. Bar None.
I hear you now, gentle reader: "The greatest AMV ever? That's quite the claim, Wonderduck." To which I reply, "who are you and how did you get in here?"
Nevertheless, I stand by my assertion. Reader haunter103 called my attention to his AMV, entitled "Good Clean Fun", and asked if I had seen it. I had not, so I decided to take a look at it. Here it is...
By the time it was over, there were tears running down my face. Tears of joy, and, surprisingly, tears of pride as well. For there, listed at the end of the credits sequence, is Wonderduck's Pond, specifically the "Ducks In Anime" category.
Thank you, haunter103. Thank you for letting me be a small part of your accomplishment. It's a good video, and I'd think so even if I didn't love rubber ducks. However, the ducks just push it into the "godlike" category.
That was fun as all get-out!
UPDATE: If you've stopped by due to Robert's weekly newsletter, hi, hello and welcome! Hope you enjoy haunter103's video, and while you're here, why not take a look at the rest of The Pond? Since you're probably an anime fan, you might particularly enjoy the "Anime Writeups" category, where I do episode-by-episode recaps of entire series... usually, at least. Currently Kantai Collection is the show under the microscope, but Ga-Rei Zero, Rio Rainbow Gate!, Vividred Operation, High School of the Dead, and others have had the dubious pleasure of being a target. Or, of course, you can cock an eye at the Ducks in Anime category, too, because... well, because ducks, that's why. Or anything else that meets your fancy, too, feel free to look around!

Thanks to you for creating a blog that so uniquely served the purposes of my amv. I found you site a little over halfway through completion of it. I was gearing up to start filling out the big chorus scenes with as many ducks I could find, so I googled "anime ducks". I wasn't prepared to find an entire blog dedicated to the subject.
I suddenly had a lot more work to do, but I was glad that my final vid would be more complete in it's duck references. I couldn't not give your blog a special thanks afterwards. Also, these days it's hard for me not to perk up when I see ducks in current anime.

Ducks In Anime: Iwo Jima Edition -Arpeggio of Blue Steel, Ep07
During my recent enforced vacation from the internet, I decided to give Arpeggio of Blue Steel another try. If you don't know, the show is about humanity's fight against "The Fleet of Fog," robot aliens that model themselves after warships from WWII. Their computer systems take the form of young women... that's cruiser Takao on the left, and main character submarine I-401 on the right.
I have some reservations about this show. I'll get into them in detail in a different post, but suffice to say that I was pretty unhappy with the overall package. But it's got a duck.

That is one enormous duck (save the one that tends to visit seaports).

I think I'll be able to manage an episodic writeup for Kantai Collection. Really, it's either gonna be great or it'll be a trainwreck. Perfect fodder for me, either way.

Ducks In Anime: Then Shots Rang Out Edition -Sabagebu!, Ep06
I've been meaning to watch this show about schoolgirls shooting each other with pellet guns and apparently being jerks to one another, but haven't gotten around to it yet. Then Brickmuppet told me there was a scene with a high duck/person ratio and here we are. That's a very nice amount of ducks, though the frogs do detract from the overall atmosphere somewhat. Still, 10 ducks is a very nice number indeed.

Ducks In Anime: Both Of You, Dance Like You Want To Win Edition -HaNaYaMaTa, Ep11
Late last week, I get an e-mail from my brother in feathers GreyDuck, alerting me to a ducks in anime sighting. The show, he said, is about a style of Japanese dancing. Oh. Whee. Still and all, I went looking for the ducks in the episode he said, and a very weird thing happened.
I couldn't find it. Huh. He said it was in a bath scene, maybe he meant Ep10, which takes place in a hot springs/bathhouse? Bemused, I downloaded that episode and started to watch. No duck, but another very weird thing happened by the time I reached the end.
I was leaking manly tears of manly joy. Confused (but manfully joyful), I went on and watched Ep11... and oh, there the duck is. Two of them, actually! No tears for that episode, so I went back and watched Ep10 again, just for the helluvit. If you're in the mood for an emotional event, go watch it yourself. It's dumb, sure, but in a good way. In a sports story, the bench player just came up with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the ninth... and the winning run scores on a wild pitch.
Anyway, I liked it, and there's two ducks. So there you go, what more could you ask for?
It's not the best show to come down the pipe (there were a couple bits where it overdid the sports drama tropes to the point of mawkishness), but it definitely had its heart in the right place. Quite enjoyable, cute though not sexy, and actually pretty when it's not busy being School Drama #14542.

Ducks In Anime: The Show That Keeps On Giving -Tokyo ESP, Ep03
Here's what we've learned so far:
1) The penguin is named Peggy.
2) Peggy is a Magellanic penguin. This is not specifically said, but it's described as native to South America, and it likes to nest in the cracks and openings in cliffs. Combined with its apparent size and coloring, that pretty much narrows it down. Oh, it could be a Humboldt penguin, which even makes sense since there was an escape from the Tokyo Zoo in 2012 that evaded recapture for close to three months, but the coloration around the eyes is wrong.
3) Peggy is a superhero. No, seriously.
4) Peggy, like all people of good taste, has a rubber duck.
I've said it before, but there's been a dearth of ducks in anime of late. Quite annoying, that. Get with it, Production Staffs!

You deserve an award: I watched Najica Blitz Tactics and noticed a duck! The regular response to "what did you notice when you watched NBT?" is umm... something else.

To be fair, there was no something else in the duck screenshot. There were probably an additional six or seven seconds of screentime without any something else, as well. (I didn't count.)
And OGH has it right; I don't recall the last recent anime I watched that had any duckservice in it.

I did the "Ride the Ducks" tour in Branson, MO when I was a kid. Lots of noise, very little comfort, no seatbelts (then, they probably do have them now). Best part was crashing down a hill into a lake. Worst part was riding on the highway. Brutal.
Ducks In Anime Want Friends, Too! -WATAMOTE!, Ep01
Okay, yes, WATAMOTE! is a horribly realistic look at the seamy underside of high school life, the side only those unpopular kids ever get to see. Yes, it's sort of depressing how accurate it is, and how much I identify with the main character even after 27 years. All of these things are true.
But it's got a duck wearing a headset. A cute duck, too. And that makes it all okay with me.

Death in Paradise, a live-action UK detective show set on a fictional tropical island, had a rubber duck appear prominently on the ep I watched last night (Season 2, Episode 7). There was a bunch of meteorologists, one of whom had a duck as some kind of trademark in his personal photos and videos. So of course he got murdered offscreen while the poor duckie sat onscreen, helpless....
I've been watching the show on a PBS station, but it's a UK show that stations buy locally. Sorry I can't find you any clips or screencaps! The only pic I've found shows the very bottom of the duck sitting on the very top of a weather station, and thus it's just a yellow bar.

Banshee, this is for you. I don't it doesn't quite apply, since you tried to do the href route... which doesn't work... but it's still appropriate.
