"It's a paradox!" "No, it's a pair of DUCKS... in anime!"

-Hidamari x365, ep10

I so want one of the Hidamari ducks for my flock.

The second pic of the pair o' ducks is below, because some incredibly uptight, prudish office might think it's vaguely NSFW.  It's not, but someone might think it is.  So click
more...

A Certain Magical Duck In Anime

-Toaru Majutsu no Index, ep03

For what it's worth, Index is currently my pick for show of the season (non-Clannad division)...

All In All We're Just A / Nother Duck In Anime

-Hidamari x365, ep07

Hidamari Sketch is just that darn good.

Not as good as Azumanga Daioh, but you know what?  I don't care.  While it's about high school, it sure reminds me a lot of my days as a student at Duck U, and that earns it nostalga points if nothing else.  Four likable main characters (well, 3-1/2... I'm not that fond of Miyako, for much the same reason that Tomo & Osaka are my least favorite characters from AzuDai) doing more-or-less everyday things?  For some people, bamboo shoots in the eardrums would probably be more enjoyable, I'm sure, but I love it.

I'd be incredibly shocked if it gets licensed, though.  A few years back, it would have been snapped up, no question, but now?  I just can't see it, and that's a shame.  Like ARIA, it's a perfect show to sit and relax to.  I know I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

Plus: ducks.

Ducks In Anime: Apply Directly To The Forehead

-Hidamari x365, ep03

If there was a Hall of Fame for anime with ducks in them, Hidamari Sketch would be Babe Ruth.  Practically every episode has this duckie in it at one point or another!

Which, if you stop and think about it, is about as good a recommendation for a show as any other.  Most shows would be improved by the addition of rubber duckies to the lineup of characters.  Shinji wouldn't be so friggin' angsty if he had one in Evangelion, for example.  No more sad girls in snow in Kanon if Ayu had a rubber duckie or two.  Everything that happens in Elfen Lied would have been avoided if the agency had though about giving the diclonuses (diclonii?) rubber duckies!  Dokuro-chan would have been watchable with rubber duckies!

Okay, maybe not that last one.

Ducks In Anime: A Good Start...

Very mildly
-Kanokon, ep08

In an analysis of this scene, there are 11 ducks visible (though not in this picture, since some are blocked by Wolfie).  Multiply that by 21, and you're close to the number of rubber duckies in my collection.

The Amazing Colossal Ducks In Anime

-Soul Eater, ep04

I'm honestly torn between Toshokan Sensou and Soul Eater as to which is the best show of the season.  I'd have to say Soul Eater, if only because that's the one that I watch immediately as it hits my hard drive, while Toshokan can wait a while.

Funny, colorful, neat characters, a definite sense of style... I had no intention of watching the show to begin with, but it hooked me REALLY fast.  Expect a writeup soon.

How Many Licks Does It Take To Get To The Center Of Ducks In Anime?

-Princess Tutu, unknown episode.

She's a girl duck named Ahiru... and she dances ballet.  And people think anime is just about giant robots and tentacles...

Screenshot taken from the AMV entitled "Hold Me Now", just a fun, fun vid, even if you don't speak German Swedish.

I Like Big Ducks In Anime And I Cannot Lie...

-Soul Eater, ep01

Surprisingly fun show, I must admit.  Just make sure you get the "Latenight Edition" or the "Uncut" version... or you'll miss out on half the fun.  I've been trying to figure out where I've seen this animation style before, though, and it's right on the tip of my tongue (ducks have tongues?).

Thanks to Don over at The Kawaii Menace for bringing my attention to this appearance of Ducks In Anime!

UPDATE: No sooner did I type that did the show with a similar animation style jump to mind... Re:Cutie Honey!  Maybe a little bit of Dead Leaves thrown in, too.

I Needs Me Some Of That...

In comments, Steven points out something interesting over at Peter's J-List Sideblog.  Seems Peter was over in Tokyo recently, and he took a picture of a store with the intriguing name of...

Store My Ducks. Brilliant!!!

But here's where it gets weird... or if you know me and my penchant for ducks, maybe it's not so weird after all:

I ALREADY KNEW ABOUT THIS PLACE!!!

See, the Brickmuppet hizzownself, Ken, went to Tokyo last summer, and he sent me this photo:

Store My Ducks!  Even MORE brilliant!!!
And you know it's the same location... there couldn't be two places with that much awesome on display in this world.

What I regret is that I haven't the faintest idea of what Store My Ducks actually sells...  I have a feeling it's the greatest store EVER.

The Melancholy of Ducks In Anime

-Ouran High School Host Club, ep07.

I forgot just how much fun Ouran is.  Even though I've got new episodes of Clannad, ARIA,  and Bamboo Blade to watch, and I somehow fell three weeks behind on Kimikiss,  I guess I felt like something else.

On a whim, I brought up ep01 of Ouran... and wound up watching six more.

I don't usually marathon a show; three or four is my usual maximum at any one time.  Kanon and Azumanga Daioh seem to be the only series that I can sit and watch the whole run of (though I did watch 10 episodes of Clannad when I was sick a couple of weeks ago, that was more because I was testing my new DVD player's reaction to a high-complexity dual-layer burned disc... or, rather, two of them), but if I didn't have to work in the morning, I might find that Ouran would join them.

Which is so strange, because the pointy-chin style of show usually doesn't interest me at all.  But then, Ouran breaks a lot of rules in the first place, doesn't it?

Double Ducks In Anime!

Sayonara Zetsubou Ahiru?

(Both from Hidamari Sketch Special, pt1)

I had forgotten just how much I really liked Hidamari Sketch, and not just because there's a rubber duckie in every episode.  Thank you, Shintani-Spoonsubs, for fansubbing the Special, and reminding me.

It doesn't get any slice-of-life-ier than this, and I loved every second of it.  There's practically no chance it'll be licensed, though, which is a shame.  Yuno, Miya, Sae and Hiro deserve a larger audience.
