Bathing With Ducks In Anime -Hidamari Sketch Hoshimittsu, ep04
It's no shock to readers of The Pond that I'm a big fan of the HidaSketch franchise, what with it being the King of the Ducks In Anime category and all. But this revelation might come as a surprise:
I didn't like this episode.
In fact, I'm not overly fond of the two new characters either, since they're taking away from the four girls we've come to know and love. I suppose that given time I could like Nori, the computer user, but Nazuna is everything I detest in one stupidly-wrapped package. Timid and an inferiority complex the size of the Grand Canyon... ugh. I cringe when she's on-screen, and recently I've been cringing when she HASN'T been on screen, for fear that she'll appear soon.
There's still plenty of time for her to come around, but I'm not holding out all that much hope: volume 4 of the manga, which is where the series is right now, has her stay pretty much the same.
Ducks In Anime: Other Shows Do It Too! -Shugo Chara Dokki Doki, ep14
Nope, I'm not watching the show, but the good folks at Chihiro happened to post a screenshot that showed duckies, so...
I'm pretty sure this particular entry now holds the record for most rubber duckies in a single screenshot. The previous title holder was Kanokon ep08, with eight visible and 11 in-scene.
Yuno's Got A New Duck(s In Anime)!
Big news! Yuno's got a new duckie! -Hidamari Sketch x Hoshimittsu, ep02 This makes three different duckies we've seen accompany her into the bath. I think we can actually begin to count her amongst the ranks of the collectors! And here's the thing: it's a new style of duckie, to boot: Her previous duckies have a much larger open bill, painted eyes and more detail to the tailfeathers, like so: -Hidamari Sketch x 365, ep05 ...so it's pretty clear that she's gotten a new one. Or the animators drew it wrong. But I'm going with the first guess, because it fits my reality better!
And here's the neat part. If she DID get a new duckie, the other two are somewhere in her apartment, because Yuno's not the type who could throw away a duckie.
(and the sideboob was also awesome, like the previous comment mentioned)

Yuno definitely looks bustier in this picture than in previous ones, but she also looks taller. Did she have a growth spurt? (Is she young enough to still be having growth spurts? ISTR she's a high school junior, but I could well be wrong on that.

Ducks In Anime: HidaSketch Is BACK!
I've been way too long without my fix of Yuno, Sae, Hiro and Miyako. And Yuno's ducks.
Not the normal way to get into a tub...
It seems like they actually have a fairly decent budget this time around, too. It's crystal clear and the art is substantially improved (though you can't tell from the duckie scene).
I so want this duckie for my flock.
Of course, the girls are just the same as they ever were; normal, with just a dash of off-kilter to give the show something to work with. in other words, exactly how they should be. Hidamari Sketch x Hoshimittsu, we'll be seeing a lot of each other in the coming months! Yeah, that's usually the look I get when I say that...
A Celebratory Double Ducks In Anime
I can't believe it, but it's true! The Ducks In Anime show of shows, Hidamari Sketch, has been licensed by Sentai Filmworks/Section 23 and will be available here January 10th, 2010. Many times I've said that there was no chance in the world that the series would get picked up, what with the state of the industry being what it is and all. I'm deliriously happy to be wrong, though.
In celebration, it's time for a double-shot of Ducks In Anime! -Hidamari Sketch x365, Broadcast Special 02
We had what was, in HidaSketch terms, an action sequence for the duckie when it actually turned a full 360 in response to Yuno's moving her arms in the tub... and had the screen entirely to itself in the process! I swear, SHAFT must be catering to the duck lovers of the world.
The next pic is behind the NSFW tag, not because it is, but because some workplace somewhere would probably look askance at it:
-Hidamari Sketch x365, Broadcast Special 02
I don't think I've been this happy to hear about a license being picked up since Funimation took over Kanon 2006 from the corpse of ADV, when the latter went down before releasing the final DVD of the series!
It only makes sense that Sentai would grab HidaSketch, though... in my mind, it's absolutely an ADV kind-of show.

Hello Wonderduck, why don't you have a seat over there?

Ladies and gentlemen, let's give a warm round of applause for Brickmuppet.

What surprised me is that it's obviously an A-list license. I didn't think Ledford had that kind of money to invest, or that kind of credibility with the Japanese studios, where someone with an A-list property would be willing to trust him with it.

If I had to guess, I'd say it occurred because it's a short series (12+2 specials) that, perhaps, SHAFT doesn't think is an A-Lister. While I personally adore the show, I think such titles as Bamboo Blade, Chrome Shelled Regios, or Bakemonogatari are much more likely to be hits... which is why I didn't think HidaSketch would get licensed in the first place.

Hidamari is absolutely, positively not an A-list license.
It's the kind of title which will be extremely difficult to get retailers to stock. "Cute but otherwise unremarkable high school girls have heartwarming, funny adventures at school and dorm" is not a recipe for tremendous sales. Yeah, sure, Azumanga did well, but a lot of other titles haven't since then, and they'll be fresh on the buyers' minds.
I'd guess that precisely the opposite logic governed the ADV-zombie's decision. Here we have a title that none of the other companies want to touch with a fifteen-foot pole with cross-braces; ADV had notable success with Azu, and frankly at least some of the people remaining are the kind of people who'd appreciate Hidamari. On top of that, ADV's like a shark; because they own their own production facilities (through whatever weird legal contortion), they have to keep them busy, or pay people for nothing; if they stop swimming, they'll drown.

What is in that "lot of other titles"? Sketchbook, Manabi are not licensed. Pani Poni Dash is, but it was crap. Lucky Star did poorly? News to me, I have it bought scattershot, retail in Best Buy. Anything else? The Endless School Rumble perhaps?

Lucky Star was marketed by and had the full faith and credit of Bandai behind it. It is also a slightly different sort of humor. Azumanga and LS were very atypical hits. This is not the sort of thing thats flying off the shelves in general. It is not something that a lot of companies would take a chance on right now given the economy. That makers it different enough (and cheap enough)that Zombie ADV is pouncing on it. It doesn't hurt that it is similar to something they've had success with before.
I'd say its a good move.

re "Zombie ADV" I'm tempted to make a joke about "brainz, brainz" but I'll skip it.

I don't know that Lucky Star was a "hit", either. At best, Bandai traded pretty heavily on the Haruhi sales model and sales were mediocre. (Not surprising - LS is a show without a lot of plot, so there's no big penalty for stepping off the ride at any given point. It's not clear that it's going anywhere in particular until the last episode...)
If anything, it's serving as a cautionary - "we just had another one of these shows that was pitched as a big hit, but now our shelves are full of these darned expensive limited-edition boxes nobody wants."
Yeah, School Rumble is one of the shows I'm thinking of. Also, there's a number of shoujo series. Remember, we're talking retail buyers, not topic experts! None of us needs an explanation of why Hidamari isn't shoujo, but even if you told the guy at Best Buy, is he really going to go for it?

Good point that LS may not have been a commercial hit in the eyes of retailers. I do note that the Lucky Star OAV was not dubbed. Those huge collectors box sets did strike me as a bizarre marketing decision.

I went scattershot without a box. I'm not a collector.

I hope Madman pick it up in Australia, because it's one I'd definitely buy. Possibly the most enjoyable show I've watched this year.

Mine Eyes Have Seen The Glory Of The Coming Of The Ducks In Anime -A Certain Scientific Railgun, ep03
I'm not entirely sure what the purpose of the rubber duckie icon is on this workspace, but I want one anyway. We do see in ep04 that it moves, so it's not part of the wallpaper... maybe some widget. Don't care, want one.
Another HidaSketch Ep, Another Duck In Anime! -Hidamari Sketch x365, Broadcast Special 01
This hasn't been a good day at all. Ph.Duck and I had to begin trying to decide what our plans for the Holidays are going to be, and without Momzerduck around, it's going to be a very, very bad time.
When I got home, though, I found a new episode of HSx365 waiting on the torrent site, and I knew that, whatever else, there'd be 24 minutes where I'd be able to not think about the bad stuff, and that there'd likely also be a Duck In Anime entry tonight.
And lo, there is. Good ol' Yuno... I can always count on her to put a smile on my face, even if for a short time.
Killer Lolis and The Amazing Return of Ducks In Anime -Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, ep01
Sure, it's a white duckie, but it's still a duckie! The Librarian and I began Higurashi (aka When They Cry) tonight... seemed appropriate, considering Halloween is just a couple of weeks away. We made it through the first story arc, "Spirited away by the demon", and there's no doubt we'll push onwards... if we don't get sidetracked by Dr Horrible's Sing-Along Blog next week.
Ducks In Anime: Was There Any Doubt? -Hidamari Sketch x365, DVD extra
When I saw that there was a new HSx365 episode available, I was positive I'd be doing a Ducks In Anime post tonight. Sure enough, Yuno came through for me once again!
No doubt about it, HidaSketch takes the Lifetime Achievement Award for the promotion of rubber duckies in modern society. I'm pretty sure there was at least one rubber duckie sighting in every episode.
Oh, the show? Yeah, the show is awfully good too. Practically no chance it'll be licensed in the current state of anime, but I'd buy it in a heartbeat.
Ducks In Anime: Yuki N. Edition -Haruhi Suzumiya S2, ep02
As an aside, I picked up the light novel of "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya" last week... it's quite a fun read, to be honest. The appropriate episdoses in the anime follows it quite closely, to the point where I thought about watching scenes from it while I read.
It wasn't expensive, either, only $7.98 at Bob's place. Well worth it to encourage Yen Press to release the other books in the series. If you liked the anime, pick up the book. It's a light read, a good way to kill a few hours during the summer.

I picked up my copy from Powell's last month. (I love living in Portland, OR. Heh.) It is, indeed, an enjoyable read, and the anime followed it pretty darned closely near as I can tell... at least, the individual episodes tracked with their respective portions of the novel.

The source of my duckie obsession becomes crystal clear. I had a subscription to The Dragon back then, and whenever it arrived I immediately turned to the back cover to see what Leadsmith Leeper was up to at Martian Metals this month (they usually printed their ad upside down).
After that, however, I'd turn to the last page to read the newest installment of "What's New With Phil & Dixie". It never was the month for Sex and D&D, nor were there ever any Naked Elf Women, but we could always hope. Now, thanks to the miracle of the Intarwebs, you can relive those days of wonderment by rereading many of the strips at Airship Entertainment.
Tell 'em Wonderduck sent you. They'll have no idea who you're talking about or why, but it'd be worth it anyway.
That's a nice duckie. Have you ever noticed that bath water in anime is often green? I'd be scared to get near a tub filled with green water, let alone put a duckie into it...

It doesn't pay to mess with giant rubber monsters. Sure, sure, you can take down the first one. And maybe the next one. But by then the union is ticked at you, you've got a new one showing up every couple of weeks, and you know one of these days, it's going to be Gamera...

I just ran into this: green tap water is due to chloramine.
Happy Mother's Day 2009! I'm going to the Old Home Pond for lunch with Momzerduck, so F1 Update might be delayed. Because nothing's more important than your mother.

I came here yesterday & earlier today, tried to post a comment
& was told I was banned. Is that because I put "none" under Web
because I haven't one? (F1 race spoiler deleted - Wonderduck) I've followed F1 since I was a teenager, more than a lifetime ago. Found
you on this wkend's Caturday thread on Fark.com. Was it you who posted
the rotating series of cat drawings with titles yesterday? I searched
for them in the first ~500 this morning (count when I left was 1000+)
to no avail. I'd like that series, to use one of them as my avatar on
the Brunchma.com site. I recall you (or whoever) said it wasn't yours
originally. Compliments to Momzerduck, even if belatedly. You're
fortunate she still lives; ours don't. Furrnandina, our mommacat whose
grown boys are still here, is an affection hog. Ginger, the senior male, is jealous of us viewing the Caturday posts. Tnx, also mahalo, kiitos, merci, vielen Dank, etc.

Hi, Susie. No idea why it said you were banned yesterday, unless your IP address is related to a "known or suspected spam site", in which case it's inadvertent.
If you're wondering why I deleted part of your comment, please see HERE. At the time you posted your original comment (1109am), I was still watching the race... just lucky I wasn't browsing at the same time. Short version, until I post the official F1 Update! for the race, any comment with even a hint of a spoiler is ruthlessly deleted.
The "I'm a tiger... rowr." gif can be seen here! Enjoy!

Ducks In Anime: The Light Music Edition - K-On!, ep04
I'm of two minds of this show. One part of me likes it quite a bit... it's fluffy entertainment that requires no effort whatsoever from the watcher. The other part, however, is just annoyed by it all. In a way, it reminds me of the other show Kyoto Animation made in this style, Lucky Star. The problem is that after the first three episodes, LS took off like a SR-71 kicking in the afterburners and became something special. K-On! is showing no signs of doing so after four.
Sure, if you like slice-of-life shows, it's worth watching, but it just feels like there could be so much more here. I'll keep up with it, but I'm not holding my breath waiting for "magic time".

Well in ep. 4 the first clue shows up that they have more talent on board than they thought.

Yes, I saw Mio in her bikini too, Toadold. Oh, wait, that's not the "talent" you were talking about.
Yes, it appears that they've got a savant on their hands... which was telegraphed so clearly in ep03, it may as well been in clear English with the header "AF needs water".
But that's not my point. Maybe the first time they play together, the show will zoom into the stratosphere, but for a show about a music club, there's been practically no music played. *shrug* I'm just saying that it's falling flat for me, and it shouldn't be... for all intents and purposes, I'm the bleedin' target audience for this show, for heaven's sake.

Yeah it definitely needs more music (if only a scene where Yui gets given a pile of CD's a la School of Rock), but so far am sold on this show- if only for Mio (Kagami mk2- not so grumpy and a hell of a lot bouncier!)

Well what are the odds that an Anime show is going to have really great rock music?
I have been surprised by the quality of music in some of the shows since I've gone anime geek a couple of years ago, but if K-on comes up with just a couple of good or even adequate numbers I'll be happy. I kind of wish I new more about the rock music scene in Japan.

When it's a show about rock music? I'd hope there'd be more than a good OP and ED...

Ducks In Animation #41 -Wallace & Gromit in A Matter of Loaf and Death
There's nothing better than a Wallace & Gromit adventure, but it takes so long to create one (almost a day per second of film), that they come out only rarely. Imagine my surprise to discover that A Matter of Loaf and Death, a half-hour show, aired this past Christmas day on the BBC... and drew higher ratings than the Queen's annual address! 14.4 million people were watching, with 53.3% of all households in the UK tuning in (the highest rated Super Bowl, in 1982, was watched by 49.1% of all US households).
And I can understand why... it was very funny, a fine successor to all the other shorts and films Aardman Animation has done.
